New data from the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) paints a promising picture for the future of UK construction: the workforce is getting younger and more skilled.
In 2025, over one in four CSCS cards (25.16%) are now held by individuals under 30, a significant jump from just 17% in 2021. This marks an 8% increase in the space of four years and challenges the outdated narrative that young people are turning away from construction careers.
But the good news doesn’t stop there.
CSCS also reports that more skilled and advanced workers are now active on sites. Verified smart check data reveals a notable shift, in 2023, only 27% of scanned cards belonged to skilled/advanced workers. By 2025, that number has jumped to over 39%.
“It is incredibly positive to see that more young people are choosing construction as a career,” says Sean Kearns, Group Chief Executive of CSCS. “Now the focus must be on sustained upskilling across the industry, ensuring we develop a workforce that is adaptable, future-proof and ready to support long‑term growth.”
What Does This Mean for Contractors?
A younger, more capable workforce brings huge opportunity, but also new expectations.
